International Illustration Competition - Figures Futur, 11th edition

The purpose of the « FIGURES FUTUR » illustration contest is to give beginners a chance to propose original illustration pieces and novel interpretations of imposed works. In this competition, selection criteria favor innovation, both in the way images relate to words, and in the way illustrators express their singular, personal views. This contest also opens room for confrontation and thought exchange between artists from all continents..

2008 competition’s Theme: Anansi the Spider

Anansi the Spider is the hero of many legends and tales in western Africa. It can also be found in some english language Caribbean tales, in Curaçao, Surinam, Guiana...

Each contestant can choose to illustrate either one of the following tales:

A) Anansi and Death

B) Why spiders are always found in the corners of ceilings ?

Or :

  • C) ny other tale staging Anansi the Spider (a.k.a Kenndeoua, Syi...). In this case, the original text in french or english must imperatively be attached.

III) Applicants’ profile:
Anyone aiming to become a professional illustrator can be a candidate, including beginners:
• Art schools’ students and alumni
• Book illustrators with no more than 3 books published
• Press illustrators with less than 3 years professional experience
• Self-taught illustrators


IV) Application procedure:

A) Illustrations:

Each candidate must supply a cover  and a double page illustrating the chosen work.
The size of each of visual element must not exceed 40 x 60 cm.
All forms of narration are accepted (illustration, graphic novels, comic strips, photographs...).
Mediums and supports are free.
It is preferable to send originals. If the works are digital, paper prints are accepted.

B)  Multimedia
Each candidate sends only one CD, DVD or e-mail package containing visual files in the usual formats.

> Candidates must attach a complete story-board to their illustrations so the jury can evaluate their capacity for illustrating the entire story.


V) Jury and Awards
The jury is composed of professionals from the field. It selects about fourty candidates and awards one of them with the Figures Futur 2008 Prize, which comes with a 7500€ grant. The winning illustration is printed as a postcard (200 copies are given to the prize-winner).
The prize will be officially handed out to the winner on Friday November 28, 2008 at 7pm, at the « Salon du Livre et de la Presse Jeunesse en Seine Saint Denis », in Montreuil, France.
Three more awards are given by visitors: children, cultural mediators and general public. They will be announced on Monday December 1, 2008 at 5pm, at the « Salon du Livre et de la Presse Jeunesse ». Prized images will also be printed in postcard format (200 postcards given to each prize winner).


VI) Reception of the works:
Reception Deadline :
September 9, 2008

A) Tems required:
• Works of illustration with the candidate’s first name, last name and registration number inscribed on the back.
• Story board
• Application form filled out in roman print
• Complete CV
Important: personal details and bio-bibliographical information will appear in the exhibition’s catalog if works are selected.

B) Shipment / Postage:
Works can be
• Sent by post (regular or registered mail)
• Sent through an express parcel service
Postage, delivery and customs fees must all be paid for by candidates. CPLJ-93 will not pay for any delivery fees. All parcels requiring payment upon delivery will be refused.
In order to facilitate customs procedures, please mark: Illustrations without commercial value on the parcel.

• Handed directly into our office, by appointment only.
CPLJ-93 offices will be closed from July 31, 2008 until August 18, 2008. No works can be received  during that period.


VII) If works are selected:
A) Insurance
CPLJ-93 insures works until the end of July 2010.

B) Transfer of rights
Participants agree to transfer their rights over selected works to CPLJ-93 and authorize CPLJ-93, without restriction nor demand for financial compensation, to exhibit aforementioned works in France and abroad, show graphic  reproductions of the works in the exhibition’s catalog as well as in posters, invitation cards, leaflets, website and general catalog of the Book and Press Show, show photographs or films of the works in any press or TV report issued about the exhibition. Participants also authorize CPLJ-93, without restriction nor demand for financial compensation, to make photographic facsimiles of their works, in case the exhibition needs to be duplicated. Award-winners authorize CPLJ-93 to print and distribute postcards of their works.

Any other use of the works will be negotiated with the author.

C) Promotion of selected works
An exhibition
of selected works will be shown from November 26 until December 1, 2008 at the 24th « Salon du Livre et de la Presse Jeunesse en Seine-Saint-Denis ». CPLJ-93  takes charge of framing the works, making and setting up displays.
The exhibition will then travel around France and abroad until the end of June 2010.
A colour catalog of the exhibition will be published in french and english. It will represent each participant with a picture, a biography and a bibliography. Multimedia works will, in addition, appear in the website.
The catalog will be given to publishers and journalists and distributed in bookshops.
Each selected candidate will get two free copies of it.

D) Recovery procedure
In July 2010, selected works will be sent back by post in their original wrapping (please provide suitable packaging for the return).

VII) If works are not selected:

A) Insurance
Non-selected illustrations will be insured until March 1, 2009.


B) Recovery procedure
Works must be retrieved by their author or by anyone provided with a letter of authorization at the Book and Press Show, between November 26 and December 1, 2008, from 10am till 1pm, and from 2pm till 6pm.
Once the Show is over, works can be retrieved from CPLJ-93 until March 1, 2009, by appointment only. (+33  1 55 86 86 57 or figuresfutur@slpj.fr)
Until that date, illustrations can also be sent back to candidates in their original wrapping at the candidate’s own expense (please provide suitable packaging). Candidates will be informed about shipment costs and payment procedures when results are announced.
Retrieval period ends on March 1, 2008. Past that date, no illustrations can be recovered.
